Racial disparity to care about
The percentage of shooting victims in NYC who are Black or Hispanic is 96%, and it has varied very little—even as total numbers have changed. This racial disparity exists year after year after year. And it is not unique to NYC. It’s amazing how few are aware of this. (Or worse, purposefully ignore it, in pushing for related public policy and police issues.)

In New York City (and elsewhere) the risk of being shot is so dependent on race and sex. Annually, from 2006-2025 (NYC Open Data) the overall shooting rate, the risk of being shot, is 17 per 100k. Put it’s roughtly 115 from black men, less than 3 for white and Asian men. And 0.4 for white and Asian women. In raw numbers, annually: ~956 black men are shot, 90 black women and 6 white women. Of ~240 shot and KILLED each year, on average, 20 are women. 2 of those are white women.
