Lowest NYPD headcount… ever?

Lowest NYPD headcount… ever?

Bloomberg reports: “City officials said they planned to cut the next five classes of new police hires, bringing the city’s total number of uniformed officers to roughly 29,000 by the end of fiscal year 2025, which would be the smallest force since 1993.” Emphasis added.

Similar accounts from the NY Post.

But in 1993 Transit and Housing were separate police departments, and substantial ones at that. They merged under the banner of the NYPD in 1995. New York City had but about 27,600 cops in 1980, after the 1975 layoffs and before hiring started again We’ll be close to that number if the cuts take place, and the headcount? It will be at 1983 levels.

But the city had a million fewer people. By rate of police per population, NYC is near that all time low.
